Lucca and surrounding areas
With
the beautiful mountains of the Garfagnana, refreshing walks in the nearby
hills, cycling on the walls in Lucca, or visiting the fascinating nearby
medieval towns, this part of Tuscany has much to offer. Florence, Siena,
Arezzo and Volterra are all a day- trip away. The expansive white beaches
of the Versilia, from the seaside port Viareggio to fashionable Forte
Dei Marmi, are a short drive away, whilst the stunning landscape of
the Cinque Terre in Liguria can be reached by car, train or boat!
However most guests choose Il Gelsomino for its proximity to Lucca
described as in Eyewitness Travel Guide for Italy
“ Lucca's peaceful narrow lanes wind among the medieval
buildings, opening suddenly to reveal churches, tiny piazzas, and many
other reminders of the city's long history, including a Roman amphitheatre.
One of the pleasures of visiting Lucca is strolling along the ramparts-
the magnificent city walls, whose tree-lined promenade offers some entrancing
views of the city.”
There
are many antique and craft markets locally, if visiting the many shoe
shops in Lucca is too much temptation. However, the region of Lucca
is well known for excellent olive oil, and the area of Montecarlo is
good for a large range of wines. Nearby to Lucca there are Thermal Spas
including the famous Montecatini Terme and Bagni di Lucca where it is
possible to book a range of therapies. In the summer months there are
several music festivals for all tastes, including the famous operas
by Puccini performed in the open air by Lake Massaciuccioli.
